It’s been the saga of the past six or so months, and Microsoft has already made fairly clear that it will not be sharing Bethesda’s riches after podding out $7.5 billion for the publisher. PlayStation fans, perhaps in a stage of denial, had been hoping that intergalactic RPG Starfield may still make the cut, however – especially when you consider that it’s likely spent a large chunk of its life targeting Sony’s systems. (There was, ironically, strong speculation that the Japanese giant had tried to buy timed exclusivity for the title, similar to Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo.)
Well, it’s not happening – that’s according to chatty Venturebeat scribe Jeff Grubb, at least. The talkative reporter – who’s leading a kind of double-life as a Microsoft mole these days – wrote on Twitter: “Starfield is exclusive to Xbox and PC. Period. This is me confirming that.” Naturally this has led to all sorts of social media commotion that you’re better off avoiding like the plague.
Grubb didn’t elaborate on his sources, but he has a razor-sharp track-record when it comes to Xbox-related rumours – presumably he knows someone high up in the company’s hierarchy. It’s a shame because there’s absolutely no question Starfield would have been in development for PS5 and PS4 up until fairly recently, but once Microsoft coughed up a big wedge of cash its status was always in doubt. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of all is that this will almost certainly be a permanent exclusive – at least when stuff is timed you know there’s hope eventually.

It is what it is.
Competition is good and all.
If this game turns out to be a must have (I still don't know what it is) I'll get it on my Series X for sure, but if Sony had done this the internet would be on fire with "Sony is anti-consumer"
25 PlayStation 5 exclusives in development.... do I need to say any more on if I care?
Even in ps3 era, bethesda is more close to xbox (and pc) than playstation. Competition is good though, most people don't remember demon's souls ps3 originated from sony wanting to have exclusive answer to bethesda rpg (that's exclusive to xbox at that time). If starfield is good then that will make playstation work even harder to make great exclusive games 😃
Not surprising in the slightest.
I was kind of done with Bethesda (except arkane) before the acquisition so I’m good.
I’m not sure what makes Grubb qualified to “confirm” anything but I have near-zero interest in any Bethesda RPGs anyway.
Is it weird that this makes me want an Series x even less now? Weird knock on effect, I guess. But I would look at Microsoft more favorably if they kept this one multiplat... Oh well...
From the recent screen shots I saw of the game Xbox can keep it. the game look like a later 360 game which make sense the game running off the same damm engine as fallout 4 and Skyrim.
Yeah over 20 ps5 exclusives in production and in the last while sony have knocked out stunners time after time, this is not a lose in the slightest. Looks like something from previous gen, probably is, just upscaled
Based on Bethesda's last few games, I couldn't care less!
That's just going to make it the most expensive game I'll ever buy at a whopping $570.00.
I feel the opposite of most of the comments so far: I really want to play Starfield. I also really want to play the new Elder Scrolls eventually. So, it looks like after all these years my house will also contain an Xbox someday. PS will always be my favorite, but I am not missing those games.
It wouldn’t make sense to release it on Sony’s system. Would it make money? Sure. But here we are , 6 months into the next gen, and there’s absolutely no reason to buy a Series console. GamePass is available everywhere and Boost just doesn’t justify the cost. Microsoft knew they had nothing for this gen, so they bought Zenimax.
Meanwhile, Sony keeps churning out hit after hit.
@Westernwolf4 You and me both.
What makes people think it won't be another Fallout 4 or worse, another 76? Sure, they could make a comeback with this game but people seem to forget that they were attacking Bethesda the day before the buyout was announced. Like Microsoft is some sort of great game publisher to begin with.
@RavenWolfe81
Fallout 4 is great, you should play it.
Oh look, the fox and the grapes in this comment section 😛
@wiiware "most people don't remember demon's souls ps3 originated from sony wanting to have exclusive answer to bethesda rpg (that's exclusive to xbox at that time)"
That's complete BS. Demon's Souls was picked up cheap by Sony for the Japanese Market ONLY. Bethesda's RPG's were ARPG's and not successful in the Japanese Market. When Demon's Souls was being imported from gamers in the US and Europe, Sony then gave the game a release in those markets. Demon's Souls and its gameplay and style are completely different from ARPG's.
I know what I'm talking about here, I have the Demon's Souls Artbooks, and the 2 volume Dark Souls: Beyond The Grave books (which cover all the Soulsborne games). All have interviews with From Software designers, Miyazaki and development people from Sony...
@4kgk2 Bethesda have been releasing their games on the same broken engine for years. It's a tired, old POS that they claim to upgrade with each release but it's still the same ugly defective mess!
Honestly looking forward to this game a lot. If it was coming to PS5 then I’d have got it there but I’ll play it through Game Pass on PC instead. This isn’t really any different than Spider-Man not coming to Xbox, Bethesda are now a company that MS own same as Insomniac with Sony, despite both companies having made games on both companies before. It’s unfortunate but sadly the way of the industry.
Such a shame. It's always bad news when a company like Microsoft just straight up buys studios like that.
Ah well, Bethesda games are better played on a PC with modding capability than on a console.
First of all that Jeff Grubb chap is a law unto himself, he's just making an educated guess on the fact of the Bethesda/ MS deal. So please don't credit him with being a 'source'.
Second, I have seen nothing, nada, zip about Starfield online, apart from the title, a couple of mocked up screenshots, and a ton load of hyperbole from people like Mr Grubb which is entirely made up!!
I do want to see if it's any good, so if anyone has a link to some solid Starfield information then please reply.
"Naturally this has led to all sorts of social media commotion that you’re better off avoiding like the plague."
Thank you, @get2sammyb 🙏🏾
Seems the "it didn't look that good anyway" comments are already starting😂
I swear some people treat consoles like a football team. You're allowed to like Xbox/Nintendo stuff too guys, Jim Ryan isn't gonna come steal your PS5 Grinch style if you praise another system.
How much you wanna bet this and every other bethesda game gets released on PS5 1 year after its released on xbox.
@Profondo Demon's souls is a join venture between japan studio and from software, I heard that back then sony want their own bethesda-like rpg so they plan to make it their own, but the result is a different game with different (new) genre.
@nessisonett "This isn’t really any different than Spider-Man not coming to Xbox, Bethesda are now a company that MS own same as Insomniac with Sony, despite both companies having made games on both companies before"
There's still a difference there. Bethesda is/was a juggernaut at the time of being bought than Insomniac ever was when Sony got them. Even in comparison now, Bethesda is a behemoth with crazy number of games under it's umbrella. There's a huge difference else it wouldn't be making the news buddy.
@HeeHo it wasn't the tightness of his shoes, that made him take all the last of us 2s.
It wasn't the smallness of his heart, that made him take Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
No, we know the truth. It was praising the other guys, that made Mr Ryan take all the PlayStation 5s.
And the only consoles he did not pinch, were owned by the people, just like the grinch.
Will never understand how MS buying publishers and keeping their games exclusive is ok but Sony having timed exclusives isn't.
If this game is a 10-15 hour story game like prey then it won't turn out to be a big deal, but if its fallout/elder scrolls type game but in space then that's a different story
@AdamNovice because xbots seem to be the saltiest of fan boys
@TheArt Spiderman is one of the biggest IPs in the POP culture, Street Fighter was the biggest fighting IP on the market when Sony bought the exclusivity, Final Fantasy is the biggest JRPG IP in the western market.
Microsoft has every right to buy exclusive third-party IP's (and we must remember this is not the case with Starfield, it is a new IP with no announced platforms)
Exclusives would come and we all know that, the only ones that didn't wait are the ones that remain in denial, it may not be Starfield, it may not be now, but all these IP's have become exclusive to the Microsoft ecosystem.
Sony is reportedly developing 25 PS5 exclusives and Microsoft had 30 in development prior to the acquisition of Bethesta, this is a commitment, this is good for the industry, consolidation is natural, not negative like monopolies, and remember that the European Union will never let the gaming market come close to what the film industry has become, and the film industry is still not a Monopoly.
@AdamNovice Timed exclusivity is useless, from the consumer's point of view. "You will have this content, just not now, wait because company X paid for you not to be able to play."
And unlike Spideman / Street Fighter V and being honest I see Final Fantasy 7 in the same place, games that would not exist without Sony's support, so Sony has the right to have advantages in the game market. The same becomes true when you buy a company, it is much more aggressive of course.
But I see no problem at Microsoft turning historically multiplatform IPs into exclusive ones (and this is not the case with Starfield) because Sony has been doing this for years.
Control, Alan Wake and Quantum Break are canonically in the same universe although legally Quantum Break is not part of it, and yet there is exclusive Control content for PlayStatio users, even if Xbox users can understand much more details than those on PS4 / 5, remember Remedy bought the rights to Alan Wake, but he is still exclusive and Microsoft is still the owner of Quantum Break.
@MaikonCSGarcia "Timed exclusivity is useless, from the consumer's point of view. "You will have this content, just not now, wait because company X paid for you not to be able to play."'
Exactly. Like I'm not going to buy a console just to play a game 12 months sooner. But who knows. Maybe PS fans get off on the fact that other people have to wait to play a game like FF VII remastered? Not saying that they do but timed exclusives are irritating.
I’m not even sure what this game is, so it’s hard to have a reaction. A Sci-Fi RPG I guess? Isn’t all we’ve seen is a logo?
Here we go again!
I'm not going to rule out ever owning another Xbox and playing both this and The Elder Scrolls 6, be foolish of me to do so. I'll definitely be buying a PS5 first though. One day. 2023 at this rate.
😉
@AdamNovice buying a publisher or IP would be expanding your first party. And it will be followed by fully funding future first party games.
Paying for timed exclusives, whether it be MS or Sony or Epic, is paying another publisher to not release their already fully funded game on other platforms for X amount of time.
Then there's other titles like Gears of War, where MS fully funded and published the games, even though they didn't originally own the IP or studio.
And that's the difference. Funding the development of the game vs paying some money and having it exclusive for a short time. The former may not get made, the latter is being made, but is just being denied to everyone so that the companies can have their cake and eat it.
If this is true, it’s a loss for PlayStation and their players no matter what way you swing it.
@MaikonCSGarcia Honestly I never did like Sony buying all those timed exclusives from 3rd party devs etc. When I heard Deathloop was exclusive, I didn't like it tbh. I knew it was only a matter of time MS responded with something like this. The first time the news broke out about the Bethesda acquisition, my first comment was "see what you've gone and done Sony...why would you go get Arkane to make you an exclusive". So yeah if anything I'd say Sony probably started all this.
@Jimmer-jammer It might be or it might be utter *****. Nobody knows at this stage.
I'm more cheesed off about TES 6 not coming to PS but that may end up being more of an online live service title anyway. Again, nobody knows at this stage.
This is a massive shame and a huge issue for gaming that fanboys either refuse to admit or are completely oblivious to. Microsoft have played no part in creating this game, and have simply paid money to take it away from other platforms rather than create original content from the ground up like PlayStation does. I have Xbox Game Pass so will be able to play it either way, but I'd rather Microsoft created new and original content rather than stealing games away from players. It's a sad reflection of their current poor state when it comes to exclusives, or the lack thereof.
After the hot messes that were Fallout 4 and 76 I have zero faith Bethesda can pull off a must play game.
I keep seeing this game everywhere and yet I have no clue what it even is. Is there even gameplay? Any articles saying what it's about? What are people so hype about?
@nessisonett It's actually completely different. Insomniac generally made exclusive games for PlayStation anyway, and all of their PlayStation games both before and after Sony bought them have been games that were never on Xbox anyway. In contrast, Starfield was already planned and was being made for PlayStation until Microsoft poached the publisher and cancelled it.
@Beasley2K Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac had made an exclusive for Xbox, Bethesda never made a PS exclusive until Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, both of which are continuing to be exclusives after the deal.
I own both consoles. I’d hardly say Sony is really having hit after hit. If anything, the first mass appeal hit they’re launching since Spider-Man Miles Morales is Rarchet & Clank. Demon Souls & Returnal are niche at best, which got a lot of exposure because there’s not much else.
@Col_McCafferty fair enough, Starfield is a wildcard...I guess I’m also referring to the larger situation of Bethesda being bought, including the potential loss of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and new I.P. Optimistically, only new I.P such as Starfield will be Xbox exclusive.
I am 100% willing to buy an Xbox (with the incredible game pass) to play a great bethesda game . Fingers crossed that this buyout puts bethesda back on the right track
@Xenomorph_79 Spot on man.
It's an interesting debate. What is seen as an acceptable purchase and what isn't. Whether it's more improper to pay for timed exclusivity or buying a developer outright in order to create exclusive content.
MS certainly have deeper pockets than Sony and in theory could be all other major third party developers (if these were willing to sell of course) and completely remove all their titles from PlayStation hardware. What choice would gamers then have but to buy and Xbox or PC? I'm not sure that constitutes actual competition but rather a monopoly.
Sony buy developers as well but these are individual companies that often have an existing relationship with the company. Is this different from the Zenimax purchase? Yes, it is in my opinion but maybe not different enough. Which practice is more immoral?
Some may have the money, space and time to commit to more than one gaming platform (and bully for those that do) but I suspect the majority don't and we have to make a choice. Would I rather miss out on HFW and the new God of War or TES 6 and Starfield? As things stand definitely the latter but ideally I wouldn't be forced to make such a choice.
@nessisonett. You looking forward to a game a lot that you have no idea how it plays like.ok.word up son
Who cares, another bethesda game being made using their super fail creation engine. Will look great in trailers, same with ES6! but both will be a buggy turd once released. Another game that will only be saved by modders! Sony has had loads of hits so far. Xflop has had zero, dead console! Should have not even been made so there would be over 3mil more PS5s out there.
When Starfield was announced it was a big question mark for me. Now it is a quiet smaller one. I believed Starfield could be Bethesda's Star Wars or Dune.. some kind of space opera. But, based on those leaked images, I think they went to a very different direction.
Regarding the Xbox exclusivity talks, I think they should first present the game and make people want to play it before saying that it will only run on Xbox and PC or else they would only be hurting the game, really.
@playstation1995 It’s Bethesda in space. I can imagine. Might not be everybody’s cup of tea but I like Elder Scrolls and Fallout enough to trust that it’ll be messy but fun.
Good and I hope elder scrolls doesn't either,Sony will then make their own 1st party single player rpg to fill in the gap,they have far more talented studios.
Somewhere, on a shelf in Bethesda's offices, there will be a hard drive, gathering dust, that contains the PS5 versions of Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6, never to see the light of day.
Unless XBox gets crushed by PS5 when this gen finally gets under way (when people can buy a console of their choosing), there's no need for MS/Bethesda to publish anything on Sony's console - sad, but true.
@MaikonCSGarcia I'm sorry but I'd rather timed exclusivity then previously multiplatform IPs being permanently kept off a popular platform in the name of "competition". If people haven't got patience to wait till their preferred platform got the game then that's there fault.
Keep it off PlayStation! I wouldn’t want to waste precious ssd space being saved for the upcoming first party exclusives.
My gaming pc on the other hand is patiently waiting for anything from Microsoft that isn’t The Medium...
@HeeHo I imagine the people who say things like that, are the same people who want to turn people down, but are never asked. So they sit and pout. As if Sony or ms cares about this "ignorant loyalty".
I wasn't expecting to be able to ever play another Bethesda game anyway. I'll miss them, but on the other hand, those games are so long, so more time to play other stuff I guess.
@Beasley2K Does Sony owns Disney, Capcom and SquareEnix? If not you are being a hypocrite.
@Beasley2K genuine question: does Sony have a hand in FFXVI development? I actually don’t know either way but if they don’t then all they have done is “paid money to take it away from other platforms”.
@HeeHo Fanboys care more about the platform than the game itself.
@AdamNovice Did you complain about Spideman / Street Fighter being exclusive? Because this was the time to complain and position yourself, everything you do now starts to harm you and not benefit it just sounds like hypocrisy. Remember that website and community celebrated the Exclusivity of each multiplatform IP that Sony paid for.
Game I played the most on PS3: Fallout New Vegas e Skyrim.
Game I played the most on PS4: Fallout 4.
Good bye Sony. Hello Microsoft.
@vhsodre So long then!
👍
Been gaming for over 22 years and honestly I have never even heard of Starfield. Closest what comes to my mind is StarCraft, which I assume is not what Starfield is. So it's the last game I would be worried about to not play. Besides RPGs were never my cup of tea.
@sanderson72 last time I checked console sales, ps5 sold near 8 million while Xbox series S and X sold 4 million combined, so I am pretty sure people know the best place for them to play. Me and everyone I know have the opinion that if you have a beefy pc there is no reason to get Xbox, just get ps5 and pc and you are good for the generation.
@meistergeister when you right you right
Oh it's Jeff Grubb,
Also some IGN journalist confirming their own confirmation 🥱
Do we have the numbers somewhere for sales of Skyrim on PC vs XBox vs PS vs Nintendo? Using that as an indicator it'd be interesting to see how many sales they're potentially skipping out on. Half?
If this wasn't Microsoft with their limitless money they'd have to reduce the budget to adjust and remain profitable right?
Who is Jeff Grubb? Is he able to confirm Microsoft business decisions?
@TwomanybuttonS this is really all that needs to be said. Bethesda game studios hasn't made a descent game since Fallout 3. Doom is not for me and Wolfenstein's last outing was just awful. Only sad to be losing Dishonoured and Prey, Arkane studios know how to make a game.
if you did not expect this you need to think about seeing a doctor
@SZRT_CIC_Ice
tf is this comment
strangest coping i have ever seen
If Bethesda's latest game fiasco's and poor quality are any indication.. it probably isn't a big loss. I'll just wait till it drops in price on PC so I guess I'll be playing on PC. Blech.. I hate playing on my PC.
@Shepherd_Tallon This isn't good competition though. MS keeps losing in the gaming space, and because they are so rich, it doesn't matter. They bought Minecraft, both almost all WRPG devs, bought Zenimax. This is not good competition, and I don't get why we keep calling it that.
This is how the industry works. Exclusivity is all, and has always been. Why are we talking about this?
@Omnistalgic I don't completely disagree, and I'd rather if MS had further developed their other first party studios instead of doing this, but it does mean that Sony will have to keep their foot on the pedal.
Hopefully seeing MS buy up all of those RPG devs will nudge them towards making a high fantasy RPG of some kind.
I've been hoping to see them do that for years.
@LordSteev It really isn't. Any game that is stupid easy on hard, isn't a good game.
Starfield will = Cyberpunk 2077 i.e a Buggy mess Like 99% of PC like games.
@KippDynamite The answer to all your questions are in the article.
I don't think I've ever played a Bethesda game, so not too fussed about the Xbox thing. I do get the size of the brand's they have though, do I get why some will miss these on Sony consoles going forward
@KippDynamite
Please don't disturb the keepers.
@Shepherd_Tallon That's a great scenario happening from this, so yeah theoretically that would turn it into "good competition". But again, it's at the expense of Sony's teams doing something cool because MS keeps buying stuff lol. I'm hoping ES or Fallout (doubt I will like this) Fable, Starfield, Avowed etc...are really really special games and I'll get an Xbox if they are. But something just rubs me the wrong way about how MS is operating. They are simply opening up the checkbook and seeing what sticks lol. That does benefit the industry, but it just doesn't feel right to me, or at least not what's truly beneficial for gaming to get better.
@HeeHo Amen.
@Shepherd_Tallon Competition is good when it produces something good. Sony has nurtured studios into gaming GotYs. MS bought a publisher and didn’t make anything new. I don’t see MS offering a throng to the games better, in fact, a lack of dualsense just hurts some of these games given how Tokyo and Deathloop are supposed to be with it. I want MS to make good exclusives, but to do so in a way that adds something new to the market.
@Omnistalgic The only way it benefits the industry is that Sony doesn’t have a virtual monopoly on console gaming (switch is kind of a different market.) I want MS to make exciting new exclusives. I have PC to play them, and Starfield was always probably going to be PC game for me, but so many would benefit from the dualsense: I want Doom Eternal with it so bad and the next doom might not now.
@Ambassador_Kong
According to the article the answers to my questions are "Jeff Grubb is some guy" and "no, he can't officially speak on behalf of Microsoft." Ergo my comment throwing shade on the quality of this post.
Why is this even a news?!
Starfield is developed by Bethesda.
Bethesda is fully owned by Microsoft.
Starfield is exclusive to Xbox.
It is like getting shocked that Ghost of Tsushima sequel is a PS5 exclusive.
Folks lets turn over a new leaf.
@Dr_ENT
Normally that logic is sound, but there are still some reasonable questions to ask.
To this day Microsoft hasn't directly stated "Bethesda games will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Their games will not come to Sony or Nintendo consoles." In fact, a Bethesda game is releasing on Sony consoles within the next few months.
Microsoft bought Minecraft for 2 billion dollars but still released it on competing platforms, so there is precedent for them to release games they own on other platforms.
The closest Microsoft has come to a solid comment was to say "they will release anywhere there is GamePass." They have nothing to lose by being direct about the topic, but for some reason they haven't been.
Hence why it's arguably newsworthy. However, this article says that some guy who doesn't work for Microsoft confirmed his own opinion - not really news.
@Omnistalgic Again I'm inclined to agree.
I don't like that a large chunk of fans will now potentially be cut off from existing franchises that they previously enjoyed. That part doesn't sit right with me (again, can you imagine if Sony had done this?).
I'm all for exclusives and I love the three console platforms. Exclusive franchises are what I look at when I'm buying a new console, but not like this. I'd much rather if MS had invested in new exclusive IP rather than going this route, but they needed content fast to keep people buzzing about Game Pass, so here we are.
But that's all just my opinion and it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The potential for Sony being pushed on to do more is how I'm looking at this (glass half full). Even if it's giving us an anime streaming service as part of our PSN sub I'd be pretty happy, but hopefully it's a new IP. Even just one high fantasy IP by a Sony studio. God I'd kill for that.
Like I said, it is what it is. We may just look forward to seeing what Sony will do to fill the gaps. That's if they even feel the need to. Honestly for me all that's missing is Elder Scrolls now. I can play that on my Series X, but plenty of Elder Scrolls fans on PlayStation won't have that option, which is a little sad. (I don't play any other Zenimax titles.)
Last point - Someone pointed out earlier that Demon's Souls first started as a counter to Elder Scrolls.
We might not like how MS have gone about this, but if it prompts new IP from Sony to counter what's missing I say feck it.
@Jaz007 Yeah I much prefer the Sony approach to this, but regarding your other point, and to be fair, this purchase has only just happened. It hasn't produced results for XBOX yet outside of expanding the library on Game Pass. We'll have to see how it turns out before we can judge it in that regard. And honestly, it will probably turn out pretty good for the XBOX library.
I don't play most of the franchises that they've, I assume, locked to XBOX by doing this, but lots of people do and most of those studios under Zenimax are outstanding.
I still haven't played Fallout 4 and I bought it at launch.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah I'm with you, the only game I played from this Zenimax studios is Elders Scrolls back in 2008 lol. I always thought WRPG mechanics are clunky. This doesn't at all pertain to me or my gaming tastes. Just a wild thing to spend 10B in the industry and I'm most curious how it all is going to shake out. In the end though, it's just about enjoying games lol .
@TeapotBuddha I owned a 360 but it was the strength of Sony's exclusives (some former ones as they ended up on PC) that made me go PS last gen. They convinced me that the best place to play SP games was on PS4.
Xbox haven't convinced me that this gen the Series X is better than PS5. Game Pass is all I hear about and really I'm sure it's great but as of now Xbox haven't released any good new games for their shiny console and it baffles me how they.seem to be getting away with it.
Maybe things will change but in all honesty I don't think they care about making great SP games, it's more about quantity than quality with them. That's where they see the value. Who's to say the TES 6 will be like Skyrim? A proper SP game that offers hundreds of hours of content. More likely it will be a live service game stuffed full of MTX.
As a fan of SP games, in particular those big AAA titles that Sony excel at, PS5 is still the most compelling device to own. All Xbox players care about is GP and it's got to the point where they expect every game to launch on the service and if it doesn't they'll wait and wait until it does. long term I'm not sure how third party companies can continue to exist unless all they make are live service games and F2P titles stuffed full of MTX and loot boxes.
If you or any other gamer really cares about quality SP gaming experiences then you have to root for Sony this gen. Xbox are just trying to kill the competition until they're all that's left and then watch the subscription go up and up and up. Don't trust them.
This is pretty much what I expected, but it’s still disappointing. I’ve had some great times playing Bethesda’s games.
If both this and Elder Scrolls 6 are exclusive to Xbox I know I’ll end up buying a Series X. Which is probably partly what they’re hoping people will do.
@TheArt
Also, Sony and Insomniac worked together making PS exclusives for decades before being bought out. Bethesda on the other hand was a multiplat studio up until being bought.
@most of you
We'll see how well Starfield and ES6 sell. You are an idiot if you don't think they will do well.
@AdamNovice “Will never understand how MS buying publishers and keeping their games exclusive is ok but Sony having timed exclusives isn't.”
Both of these practices are perfectly acceptable. It’s annoying when your preferred box doesn’t get a game, but this is how the business has worked forever. I’ll never forget when I found out FF7 was coming to PS instead of N64. Such a bummer when I was a kid.
@Salt_AU Hope you remember this thread after the games come out. You can use it to shame yourself with.
@Salt_AU I don’t believe MS’s goal is to sell 20 million copies. I believe their goal is to hit 50 million+ Game Pass subs. Every time they put quality titles on the service, they’ll inch closer to that goal.
@Salt_AU “GP is not sustainable”
Depends. If it gets enough subs, it is absolutely sustainable. It isn’t sustainable at 20 million subs paying less than full price. If MS can get 70 million people paying $15, that’s 12.6 billion a year in just subs. That’s definitely sustainable.
Shrugs. The Bethesda purchase was good for microsoft, and microsoft alone. Now the purchase has gone through, i will no longer think about Bethesda games after Ghostwire Tokyo releases. It is what it is. No point getting upset about it. This isnt bitterness by the way. But what is the point raging about it.
I am so attatched to Playstation's ecosystem at this point that im not going to go anywhere else. Sony would have to really drop the ball at this point for me to go elsewhere.
As for Starfield, we literally know nothing about it. Yes it will probably close Microsoft's E3 this year, but at the moment all we have seen a splash screen with a logo. It could be amazing, but who really knows at this point.
@Hypnotoad107 if Microsoft get onto Smart TVs, either with the game pass app built in, or some kind of chromecast device you plug in; and get good response to xcloud on mobile; and manage to get on the switch (as is heavily rumoured), they'll have no problem hitting those numbers
I just got full trophies for Fallout 4 before starting Returnal. My goodness was that game a slog. Same old buggy engine felt straight like it was ripped from Elder Scrolls complete with lockpicking and unintentionally hilarious NPC moments.
For a game that’s been out so long and had, I presume, numerous patches by now, I still had the game crash on me at least 5 times while playing. Additionally, there were multiple times where my character just got stuck in the world, hung up on something in the corner of a room, and nothing would release him, forcing a revert to a previous save. I had trouble with a couple missions not showing up after triggering events for them, forcing a reload. I had enemies fall through the ground making me unable to kill them when the current mission required me to clear out a house full of enemies, forcing a reload.
Then they release Fallout 76 after that to even further criticism and terrible bugs/glitches.
Point being my interest has soured greatly for Bethesda games based on their most recent output. Their games are extremely lacking in polish and I hope they can straighten it out for their future releases.
I will say that their games nail it when it comes to atmosphere. They are top notch with that, and also the amount of dialog in their games is seriously impressive.
@clvr
👍
"There are many who pretend to despise and belittle that which is beyond their reach."
Just means I'll get to play it for free with Game Pass when it eventually releases.
I am sad it's not coming to PS5 though, prefer it over Xbox/PC.
The first game of probably many to start thinking about the jump. Especially when all there studios start producing games. Its the whole reason ive held off buying a PS5. Im going to wait and see how Sony approaches this. If we still are getting the two or maybe three exclusives a year like we did during the PS4 then Sony won't be able to compete. And no there timed exclusives that fool alot of casuals into thinking they have more exclusives than they do doesn't work on me.
@Hypnotoad107 that’s why I got all 3 latest boxes. Can get any game no matter where it comes. Xbox is my preferred for multiplataforms and Gamepass but have my PS5 & Switch for their respective exclusives. All have their place for me and enjoy them all.
It’s awesome to leave console wars behind and just get whatever that catches my attention.
@Shepherd_Tallon Sony does it way more than Microsoft. Not to mention when they do it you have to have a Playstation console to play. At least when Microsoft does it you can play it on pc or stream it.
Sony couldn't afford to to buy Bethesda.
Any platform holder buying any studio is anti-consumer but it happens with all of them because they want you to buy their systems/ecosystems.
Everyone needs to stop crying and move on. Buy whatever games you want for whatever systems you want but stop pretending that you suddenly don't care about missing out on other platform exclusives.
@Casco Agreed. Xbox is my preferred multipurpose box, as well. I let my son keep the ps5 in his room, and I just commandeer it when something comes out that I want to play. Sony games (the one’s I love, anyway) typically have very manageable times, so I just borrow the system for a couple of weekends when a game I want to play comes out. I absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima, and I’m really excited for Horizon. I like R&C, but it’s not the type of game I’d drop $70 on. I’m very curious what Sony has up there sleeve after GoW releases. I’m also interested in these 25 games that are in development. Are they all in active development, or are a number of them in the idea/pre-production stage of development? Definitely an exciting gen for both sides.
It won't make me buy an Xbox and I'll have plenty of other great games to play. No biggie.
@KippDynamite Hmmm...the article I'm reading says he is a reporter from Venturebeat (a site that covers emergent technologies) who has a good relationship with Microsoft and a reputation for accurately predicting Microsoft announcements before they happen.
@nessisonett Yes, and? My point is that they're not taking games away because there was never any plans to make Sunset Overdrive 2.
@MaikonCSGarcia Your own lack of understanding does not make someone else a hypocrite.
@K1LLEGAL I have no idea, I know nothing about Final Fantasy but is it a time exclusive?
@vhsodre
Peace out!
I feel that this is another "POWER OF THE CLOUD" moment for Microsoft. Will the games be on PlayStation? No. But it's a whole bunch of noise that will result in nothing. PlayStation will still have more games. PlayStation will still have better games. This has been documented since PlayStation's inception.
My most liked games are Space Games. I will miss not getting Starfield and other Bethesda games. It's just part of the gaming life unfortunately in today's world. Just like Sunset Overdrive everyone will got over Bethesda games on Xbox over time.
@LegacyRXT
It's simple... The fact that they took a game that was originally multiplat and made it exclusive, isn't sitting well with me. It's logical from a business standpoint. But it makes me view them more negatively than if they had done it with a new/unannounced ip.
Not sure why that's hard for you to understand... Unless you're self centered and can't perceive views outside of your own.
@Shepherd_Tallon very true. The double standard is real in almost everything we do. Look at the idiocy in our two party system politically. Both playing for the same team, yet keeping us divided for their profit. Now we literally have misinformed idiots running around defending their own enslavement. 'Murica
@K1LLEGAL I guess the answer is yes then. And that "hand" in the development is the money they paid to help fund it. With that money Square is able to employ the people who make the game.
@SZRT_CIC_Ice as for exclusives. Microsoft’s are the most accesible. You don’t even have to own the console you can just pay a couple of months of Gamepass and play on PC or Xcloud. For Last of Us 2, or Ghost of Tsushima, I can only play on my PS console.
They are very accesible but I don’t see why they would put it on a competing platform as well
Same for TES6.
You were dumb to be in denial. If you wanted to kick up a storm you should of done it then rather than fall for the usual microsoft lies.
Microsoft is a bait and switch company. The quicker people realise that the quicker they will learn not to be surprised when the switch comes.
On the bright side, bethesda series were in quality decline and i doubt microsoft supervision will do anything to help that.
I'm not sure why everyone is so bothered about this game when we know absolutely nothing about it.
If past Bethesda games are anything to go by, then they will be a huge buggy mess to start with.
If it turns out good and you want the game then just buy a Series X 🤷🏻♂️
at this point who even knows when this game is coming out , 2025? 2026? we don't even have a release date for the new elder scrolls either. its hard to get excited for these games when you have no clue what its even about either. i think we'll see elden ring before starfield.
I used to love Bethesda games about 20-15 years ago... I tried The Outer Worlds (yes I know it was made by Obsidian rather than Bethesda but it plays ‘just’ like ES and FO) and I couldn’t muster more than around 7 hours before uninstalling it through boredom.
I will read/watch the Starfield reviews with curiosity but if it follows the old Elder Scrolls/Fallout template, I’m good with missing out. If it’s this gaming revolution that the people pushing it would have you believe (& Grubby is indeed correct that it turns out to be MS exclusive) maybe I’ll get a Series S and Game Pass for a few months... maybe.
I don't know enough about this game even if I did care so don't really know what I'm missing???
If I hadn't been so disappointed with the last few Bethesda games I think I would have a bigger reaction. Only time will tell...
What was that? Bethesda saying their game with an unknown release date will be exclusive to Xbox? Sorry I couldn't hear them over all the PS5 exclusives I've already been enjoying over the last six months, with more still to come. Oh well...
I'm looking forward to the next proper Fallout game the most. I played Fallout 4 again recently and I think it's arguably one of Bethesda's best games.
@Salt_AU #132
I am genuinely curious, what do you do for a living if you do not mind me asking?
You have a very strong opinion on this, so I am intrigued.
@CKFilms
When I see a response like yours, it makes me chuckle.
Nothing to do with the fact that you have been enjoying exclusives.
But that structure of your response just pushes you into a fanboy territory.
I hope you were simply joking.
@RBMango Agree 100%. Why would MS not keep it exclusive with the billions they spent acquiring Bethesda. Competition is good, keeps corporations honest and consumer 'friendly'.
@Salt_AU #131
I think the same can be said for Sony's exclusives.
Regardless of how people feel about Microsoft's user base, it is not really a small number. Just a "smaller number" when compared to Sony's.
Those games can make more money as well if they are made available to an additional user base, not engaged previously.
I mean may as well throw them on pc while at it, since developers and publishers will make more money, right?
The point I am making here is, exclusives play a role in competition. They aren't in customers best interest, generally speaking.
They shouldn't be a thing.
Maybe a company claims to not like them for what ever reason, but if But if competition won't stop making exclusives and signing up timed deals, you can't just sit there while twiddling eith your thumbs, watching your competition making a fool of you. You will have to engage similar practices, regardless of how you feel, if you want to stand a chance.
It's just how things are.
@Salt_AU #104
I honestly really wanna know what your educational background is.
I am specifically referring to "7.5B outlay" comment.
@TrolleyProblems sarcasm isn't easy in written form
This comment section is a hilarious display of fanboyism. 🤣
And this ladies and gentlemen, is why you own multiple consoles or a gaming PC in you're serious about gaming.
@CKFilms agreed.
Try /s next time.
@SZRT_CIC_Ice you do know Sony tried to buy exclusivity for this game right? #itsokwhensonydoesit.
@Salt_AU "Success at the end of the day is measured by sales"
It's not though. There are many different factors to measuring success. You have things like revenue, engagement, and ROI.
Companies actually prefer to use return on investment. That's why you can have good games like Days Gone be in the top twenty most sold games of 2019 but still not sell enough for a sequel.
They spent too much money on development and made a lot of sales at discount, meaning the ROI was lower than expected.
Games on game pass will be judged based on 'engagement'. Essentially meaning that if a game has X% of play time on the service, then its revenue is X% of the total revenue of game pass, and from there they can judge ROI.
I've somewhat talked about this before. Sony has made all their platinum trophies super achievable, and they've done so because what they offer is a 10-20 hour experience at £70. Once you are done with that, you have stopped giving money to Sony. If you were to play that game for a year straight trying to earn a hard plat or experience a wide open game with hundreds of hours of content, Sony would have lost you as a returning customer for that year. So the model is, have the customer pay £70, finish the game and the plat as quickly as possible then move on to the next £70 game.
But if you are MS offering MP games like Halo, or open world RPGs like Starfield, that are intended to be played over months or years of play (as many people do) then a reoccurring subscription allows you to maintain monetisation of that game beyond the initial cost, without losing players to games they have already paid for. A game like Starfield could earn MS more money per person than a standard £70. Starfield could be more financially successful than a game like the last of us 2 despite selling far less, just by keeping players engaged with the content.
I'm not saying it will, but that is the theory MS is going for here, and just looking at direct sales comparisons will not show the reality of success.
@Richnj
Finally someone who understands the evolving world of game economics.
The reality is you have PlayStation and Xbox that have two completely different approaches this generation and they can't really be compared in the traditional sense anymore.
@Beasley2K "Create original content from the ground up like PlayStation does"
Yeah you're right. Sony have never just bought a studio outright and acquired the IP.
Oh wait...Sony have been buying studios and their IP since the early 90s.
@__jamiie I never said Sony don't buy studios. Buying studios isn't an issue. My point is that they generally buy studios in their infancy, or who predominantly make exclusives anyway, rather than large established multiplatform developers to then stop those games from being created for other platforms.
Almost all of PlayStation's first party studios make games that were only ever on PlayStation. In contrast, with Microsoft's Bethesda acquisition, about half of their first party games will be multiplatform franchises that already existed and are being taken away from fans on other platforms.
If Microsoft use the acquisition to start creating brand new franchises that didn't exist before, then I'll be a lot more optimistic about the situation. For example if they bought them before Starfield was a thing and funded them to create this game from scratch, that would be good. But if they're just going to continue making Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, which they would have done anyway, and not let half the fanbase play them, that's an issue.
This is as bad of Xbox owners as it is ps owners. Bethesda would release far far more games if they were still independent. Their budget will be slashed and they will fit in with the other Xbox exclusives which are few and far between because their focus is not sales but GPU as both an Xbox and Sony (and nintendo) their acquisition by Microsoft means less games from Bethesda. Full stop. Exclusive or not. Don’t believe me - in five years time let’s compare last five years of releases and following five years from today.
Xbox only people don’t seem to realise this and are claiming some sort of victory. Ridiculous. Nobody wins here.
@__jamiie just out of interest (I don’t know) how many games that were multiplatform were bought by Sony and made exclusive?
@Beasley2K So MS shouldn't have bought Bethesda because of some kind of ethical responsibility to not upset PlayStation fans???
Why is it that Sony buying studios and excluding gamers from certain franchises doesn't offend you?
Sony would have bought Bethesda in a heartbeat if they could afford them. They couldn't.
@Col_McCafferty
You hit the nail on the head with that one. The $10 a month that Gamepass brings in for hundreds of games can't replace people buying games for $60. Eventually publishers will be forced to make live service games to survive like you said.
@Stocksy Why does this even matter??? If you love games then buy the games that you love.
I own systems from all platform holders and love the fact that they offer different things. All of them buy studios that will offer them an edge over the competition.
If you want to play Uncharted buy a PlayStation. If you want to play Mario Kart buy a Switch. If you really want to play Elder Scrolls them buy a ****ING Xbox.
If you don't want to buy one then don't. Just stop crying that every game you want isn't available on the particular lump of plastic and metal you've decided to swear blind allegiance to.
@__jamiie Microsoft shouldn't be taking away franchises from 50% of the fanbase in a shady business manoeuvre as opposed to making original games.
I'm not saying buying Bethesda per se is an issue. But they have tonnes of multiplatform games under their belt, and making them exclusive isolates the fans that made Bethesda big in the first place. As I've already said, I'm all for Microsoft using Bethesda to make brand new franchises exclusive to their ecosystem. But I am not a fan of buying out franchises to take away from gamers.
What PlayStation does doesn't "offend" me because they don't do the same thing. I already explained that they buy studios that generally make exclusive games. They haven't taken Xbox franchises away to make them exclusive to PlayStation. I would be just as critical if Sony bought Rockstar to make Grand Theft Auto exclusive, or bought Ubisoft for Assassin Creed.
And please stop perpetuating the ***** that Sony would have "done the same" if they could. The fact is that they didn't, there is no evidence that they had any plans to or even considered it. This is a completely baseless assumption and a fictitious argument. The only fact is that they didn't do it. But Microsoft did.
@SZRT_CIC_Ice I was more likely to check out an Xbox before this move honestly. It doesn’t add anything to the industry it just takes away from others and I’m not going to reward Microsoft for trying to buy their way in to having good IP. Tired of people acting like Microsoft is an underdog and not one of the richest companies in the world.
@blinx01
Yeah, I've been a multiplatform gamer for over 15 years. It always makes me laugh watching single console owners cry that they can't play game X on console X.
That being said, what MS did by buying out Bethesda was dirty pool. There's a huge difference between Sony buying up companies that they've worked with to make PS exclusives for decades, and MS buying up a multiplatform developer. There's also a huge difference between Sony buying up Guerilla games back when it was nothing and turning it into a quality developer. But then again, maybe MS will be able to whip the "We Happy Few" devs into shape?
I'd like to see MS making it's own home grown content rather than go on an acquisition spree. Nintendo and Sony both have their own home grown internal studios that make quality content. MS has never had that. They have to resort to the monopolistic tactic of buying up 3rd parties to even begin to compete with either Nintendo or Sony.
@Beasley2K Sony didn't do it because they couldn't. Sony aren't some ethical beacon to be in awe of. They're a business that wants to make money and genuinely doesn't give a **** about anyone's thoughts or feelings as long as they keep on paying them.
So you'd be happy if Bethesda decided to only make new IP now they've been bought by MS??? In that scenario everyone would miss out on the games they would no longer make for existing franchises. So basically you don't want anyone to have access to Bethesda games because you can't play them on PlayStation. Grow up.
I doubt development even touched a PS. Even if it was planned to release on PS before the MS deal, I bet it was still being built on PC's and not ported to PS yet. The XB1 is the 'weakest' console its expected to release on so that is likely to be considered more than the PS4. Maybe they were in the latter stage of porting and trying to get the game up and running on PS but PC would have been the main focus through development with a 'consideration' to the 'weakest' spec - which in this case happens to be XB1.
Most of Sony's studio's were bought too as were Studio's owned by EA, Activision etc too.Publishers buy Studio's, IP's etc to boost their portfolio. It just so happens that MS and Sony also have hardware and want to boost their ecosystem too where as those other publishers want to maximise their market by choice - so release on as many platforms as they can...
Nothing is stopping you from playing ANY of these games IF you really want to. I can't play Horizon, God of War, R&C, Uncharted etc without buying a PS and I can't play Forza, Starfield, Fable, Perfect Dark, Gears of War etc without a Platform that supports Xbox - whether that's a Console, PC or Mobile device. If you want to play those Xbox games, you have a choice of platforms - at least one you probably already own too. If its about Controller preference, you can use a DS4/5 on mobile and PC too so I bet many here have access to hardware to play these games on without having to buy an Xbox console. A Series S isn't that expensive either if you wanted a cheap 2nd console specifically for MS exclusives...
@__jamiie calm your jets maverick.... I own all three. I genuinely wondered..... you are the one that claimed Sony had been at it.... so I wondered how many they had done it to....
If you don’t know and you made a baseless claim just say so.
I want more games, more game exclusives... on all three... Bethesda being bought by Xbox means LESS games and that includes on the Xbox.
When was I crying? I responded to a claim you made.
Have you been drinking? You seem angry and confused.
I'll care when the games release to wide critical success. Until then, I'm just thinking about their recent history and its not that big of a deal.
Just hope people are prepared for a bug farm.
@__jamiie Sony didn't do it because they didn't do it. End of. It's not a matter of whether they could have, because at the end of the day they didn't do it so it's a non-argument 😂 Yes, they're a company in this for profit. And they have made far less controversial businesses decision than Microsoft has, that are far more consumer friendly. And that's what I care about.
No, that's not what I'm saying. When the acquisition first happened Spencer said exclusivity will be on a case by case basis. Personally, I think the best option would have been for existing big franchises to stay multiplatform, whilst new and original franchises were exclusive to Microsoft to help promote Game Pass and benefit from exclusivity. That way, fans aren't having anything taken away from them and we get new games on Xbox so everybody wins.
Now stop being upset that someone on the internet has a different opinion to you that you don't like and accept that not everyone agrees with you, because it's frankly pathetic. Run along now boy!
My prediction? A 7/10 ‘Fallout in Space’ with solid RPG mechanics, let down by the ageing jank-fest that is the Creation Engine. I’m expecting quality from Arkane, Obsidian and id in the future, but not Bethesda (as a dev). I don’t feel this will be a big miss for PlayStation users.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L just out of a friendly curiosity, what part of The Evil Within is in any way a rip-off if Silent Hill? I enjoy both series very much but am failing to see the comparison outside of maybe pyramid head and safe head.
I just can't drive myself to care about a game we have seen literally nothing official of yet.
I mean the obvious solution is to buy an Xbox Fridge. Always have all 3 consoles anyway, so this isn't an issue. Though given Bethesdas track record lately it defo won't be a day 1 purchase. More like a 20 quid grab from the Game Collection
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L cool, thanks for the reply. I would very much welcome a new Silent Hill to fill the Evil Within hole left by this Microsoft deal. One of the best horror series ever. Cheers
If it's good I'll play it on PC someday. I've pretty much made peace with no more Bethesda, after I get around to Doom Eternal.
Considering by the time it comes out we will be on the PS7 and the game will be full if glitches I don't think we are missing much.
And ofcourse there's the option of buying an xbox and just play the darn game...
@Salt_AU
Understood. Thank you for your kind response. I apologize for being nosy about your personal life.
@Casco
Astro Bot, Demon's Souls, Returnal, Sackboy, Miles Morales, Destruction All-stars...all new releases. Elsewhere...???
Crickets...
@Beasley2K You were the guy who said that Sony does not buy exclusivity of IP's Third-party, I only mentioned a few companies that own IP's Third-party with exclusivity on PS, and you still defend Sony ...
@GameCollector84
The Coalition founded as Microsoft Vancouver.
343 Industries
Worlds Edge
The Initiative
Turn 10
All founded by Microsoft, Halo for example would not be Halo without Microsoft, it would be an RTS similar to Halo Wars.
@MaikonCSGarcia
Well The Coalition, 343, and World's Edge just continued series that were started by someone else.
I love that Xbox is building the Initiative studio, and I hope their Perfect Dark reboot turns out really well. But let's not count our chickens before they hatch eh?
As for Turn 10, I had no idea that they were founded back in 2001. Damn.
I know that MS bought Bungie for Halo, but is there any evidence that MS wanted Bungie to make it a shooter? I always thought Bungie made that decision on their own.
@Steel76
I think the difference here is that MS tends to buy up entire companies out of the blue, while Sony and Nintendo spend decades fostering relationships with companies before acquiring them. Nobody would be surprised if Nintendo bought Gamefreak tomorrow. But if MS were to suddenly buy Ubisoft that would surprise and upset many. The Bethesda acquisition is a lot like that, because both Bethesda and Ubisoft have been long term 3rd party multiplat developers. You can't say the same for Insomniac, Naughty Dog, or NextLevelGames.
Also, I too have noticed the "Sour Grapes" narrative here. IMO Bethesda still makes great games. Doom, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored 2 were all great last gen. Same goes for Fallout 4. As long as Bethesda focuses on making their games like those, and less like Fallout 76, they should have another hit on their hands with Starfield.
@MaikonCSGarcia Halo was turned into a shooter before MS bought bungie. Look it up on the net. I remember being a PC gamer back then and really looking forward to playing it. Was in some of the pc mags at the time. MS saw how good it looked and bought it to launch their system. I remember a lot of angry pc gamers at the time.
@MaikonCSGarcia
Jason Jones (Co-Founder of Bungie) decided to turn Halo into an FPS. Prior to that decision Halo was going to be a 3rd person shooter.
Microsoft did bail Bungie out though (they were in dire straights after Myth II had serious financial difficulties).

I'm hoping Starfield is good, because it will give me something to play on my series x. I think that MS bought Bethesda because they knew the initial launch years for their new consoles was very weak. They bought a lot of new studios but knew it would be years before they started to pump out games. I reckon Starfield is a lot closer than people think. And I don't blame MS keeping it exclusive.
My problem with gamepass long term is the effect it has on gamers and their mindset. (And I say this as a subscriber). There is a reason 80% of RE Village sales were on ps4 and ps5, xbox players seem to look at gamepass and don't buy that many games. That's OK but for me personally, I don't get invested in the games then. If I'd have got Returnal on GP I would have played for an hour, thought bugger this and uninstalled it. But because I paid £64 for it I stuck at it. I'm now on the 3rd biome and bloody loving it. I die and just what to get straight back in and do another run.
Will GP in the long term turn into quantity over quality and games becoming disposal? The years ahead will be very interesting for gaming.
I'm not the least bit surprised. Microsoft didn't pay billions for Bethesda to keep it the way it was. Particularly when it hardly has any exclusives worth caring about these days. (For me anyway, but thankful Fable is back!)
The only thing that truly pisses me off about Microsoft's acquirement of Bethesda is that it includes Arkane Studios. I really don't want to see their games tied down to one console. (Not counting PC)
I'm not against exclusives, if they're made by first party studios, but 3rd party exclusives sucks. So I'm definitely not a fan of Microsoft buying up a large producer of popular 3rd party games to make them exclusive. I'd rather they worked on creating new studios and new IP's during their of the Xbox One instead of cheating gamers out of popular 3rd party games.
I say this as someone who eventually own all 3 of the big consoles. This is some BS that does not improve gaming, just Microsofts bottom line.
Who cares? Microsoft hasn’t produced any triple A games from studios and publishers they bought. Like always they will screw it up. The only Bethesda games I like are Doom and Doom Eternal. And I can easily live without both games. I am more worried they will screw up Deathloop.
I try to track Starfield rumors, and it seems like a pretty safe bet that it's going to be shown at E3 in a month. Most of those same rumors have it pegged as a holiday release THIS year. Some factor in Covid and say early 2022. Either way, right around the corner.
How do you measure how successful Starfield will be? I loved the post (#160) by @Richnj on this, great post and you saved me a lot of typing. I'd add a few things, though.
Bethesda has always been a PC/Xbox developer first, dedicating most of their original development time on the old single player classics to that platform, and then porting over to PlayStation, with mixed, and I admit, sometimes horrible initial results. Their games are big, rich, complex system driven affairs that will always be a bit buggy on release. That's ok. There are bad games that are bug free, and great games that sometimes due to their complex systems and multiple play methods and sheer scope and ambition, tend to stumble out of the starting gates.
Bethesda is returning to single player, and Todd has acknowledged in multiple interviews that ESOL and 76 were experiments into MMORPG territory, and the team didn't know what they were getting into. In some of these same interviews, he stressed that Starfield was a return to Bethesda's heyday, in the grand old single player form.
Some zealots won't believe it, but Bethesda for a large chunk of the masses IS a system seller. Maybe not yet, because there is no game yet, but once Starfield releases, it's going to persuade many people, myself included, to buy an Xbox. It will also up the subscription membership. Just because Microsoft is big doesn't mean they are stupid, and I'm willing to bet they had a pretty good idea of what they were getting into when they bought Zenimax.
@Beasley2K Pathetic justification of you point and patronising. "Run along boy" is also mildly racist so thanks for that nugget. Stop crying because Microsoft has a bigger wallet than Sony.
You're clearly unhappy that MS bought some of your favourite franchises. Well, as I said before, grow up.
If I only played on Xbox I'd be gutted to miss out on Uncharted and The Last of Us. But I'm not because I don't blindly align myself to one particular machine.
I play games on all consoles because I love the medium and don't cream myself over one particular platform.
You, on the other hand, seem to not love games. Just games on the system you have chosen to support. Well done fanboy. You're why gaming is still seen as a nerd's pursuit.
@LordSteev ...agreed. The Elder Scrolls 6 will be HUGE regardless of what platform its on. Starfield will be hyped beyond belief. My guess is Bethesda will try and make questing in those games more deep and intricate a la The Witcher 3.
I've owned every Xbox and every PlayStation and will eventually buy a Series X. I don't believe in or follow great consoles, just great games, of which Xbox has had some stunners over the years. ( Although my heart is with PS)
One thing I don't understand is :- If you wanna play Bethesda games in the future....buy an Xbox ..? If you wanna play the new Zelda ( and why wouldn't you ?) ..buy a Switch
@__jamiie Run along now little boy.
@KingPev
You are my long lost twin.
Isn’t it releasing when Half Life 3 does?
@LordSteev ..Nice to meet you Bro ha ha 🤣🤣
@KingPev 😎
Mom passed along her great taste in games. Shame about the shipwreck, though..
@Beasley2K Nice comeback. You're incredibly clever and funny.
@Stocksy Microsoft buying Bethesda means less games for Xbox how???
@Casco Because it was originally announced as a multiplat. Minecraft is also multiplat. And there are countless other reasons listed here in the comments by others.
I like controlling the games i have access to. I have hundreds of games already and a curated backlog. Paying a subscription to have access to a library of games I don't care for, isn't for me. I also tend to stick to 3-4 singular games at a time over the course of several months. Sometimes, I'll pick a game up, put it down, then come back to it several years later. When a new game that you're really interested in, doesn't come to GamePass, you still have to buy it or be at MS's mercy while you wait in hopes of it being added, so you may likely end up paying more in the long run, as there are still games you have to buy. Even worse still, is GamePass may give players less incentive to buy new releases, thus making production of bigger projects not on GamePass unfeasible. I'd rather be in more control of the games I have access to, and not have to pay a subscription to do so. I also feel that subscription services will have other negative effects on the quality of games in the long term.
@Fenbops Never claimed it to be "okay when Sony does it". But how Sony does it "timed exclusives &/or long running partnerships/co-development of exclusive ip w/ direct Sony involvement, etc. seems better to me. I was suprised by Capcom going exclusive for SFV, but it didn't effect me negatively. But if XBox players were upset that a game that was originally multiplat was suddenly now exclusive to one platform, I wouldn't waste my breath telling them they're wrong for feeling that way. It's an easily understandable sentiment.
@lacerz true but other than Miles Morales (which itself is an “expansion” of a bigger game), is any of those a big AAA game? Demon Souls comes closer, but like all Souls game it’s niche. Same with Returnal - actually it’s bold they are selling a Roguelike game for AAA price - most people who bought it will just get frustrated quick soon and move on.
I stopped caring about Bethesda after Fallout 76 so PS5 not getting any of their games in the near future doesn't bother me in the slightest.
@Solidocelot I chuckled I must admit 😅
@Steel76 I own all Platforms and while I do enjoy some of their games like Doom and Wolfenstein I don't consider their absence on PlayStation a great loss. If say Insomniac were to go then yes I would consider them a great loss.
Just my own personal opinion, not hating on Bethesda or anything.
@SZRT_CIC_Ice
I totally get what you're saying. For me exclusives are absolutely fine. As long as it's clear from the get go. You don't hype people with reveals as multiplatform games and then change it into an exclusive without getting people upset. That's why Rise of Tomb Raider timed exclusivity was so annoying. Because it was so confusing. That's the main reason.
For that matter it's a shame we treat some individual s opinion as if its news in the press. It might be but I just like facts more than rumours taken as facts.
It's all so much better when things are transparent which they aren't.
@LordSteev Fallout 4 made me sell my ps4, i thought it was boring as hell but i guess each to their own.
@Deanster101
Not really clear on how a game made you sell your system, but like you say, to each their own. If you really gave Fallout 4 a fair shake and didn't like it, then I'm sure I wouldn't like whatever games you like, either. To each their own.
@lacerz first of all, comparing "power of the cloud" with their new investiment is a terrible mistake.
I chose PS3 and PS4 because they had the franchises I wanted to play but, my choice wasn't only about that. Sony will keep producing games from franchises I'm into but they're getting over their heads with their prices.
As I previously discussed here in Push Square, I'm from Brazil. Gaming here is getting too expensive for the common folk. While Microsoft is giving us an "option B", via Gamepass, Sony isn't. There are PS3 games in the PS Store that cost 40% of our minimum wage (Yes, I still play my PS3 and there are a couple of games I still want to buy), there are a couple of publishers, like Ubisoft, that raised their prices and there's no relevant sale for PS3 games since 2018. Physical copies are not an option because either they're also expensive or they're digital only. Since I'm not rich, I have to spend wisely. UK/US reality are not everyone's reality.
By the way I don't chose platform by devotion. I know nothing is 100% with Microsoft but they didn't acquire those studios for nothing. Bethesda titles are a huge deal or me and Microsoft is also promising a couple of good titles from other studios. If Sony give me a better option to acquire their titles, I'll be all in. But, for now, Xbox will suit me better.
@meistergeister could be 1000, but if they all suck then...
@Col_McCafferty did it hurt you?
I still find it bizarre why people feel the need to stay loyal to a single brand of console... The apple isn't going to get jealous that you ate an orange ffs! Just consume what you want, there is no obligation and it's better for you not to tribal yourself.
@Royalblues We ALL have PCs?!
Hahahaha!
Why would you think that?!
@LordSteev With the collection of games I have sitting on the shelf, I worry I may one day be forced to sell my house! I sleep with one eye open for fear of what they may make me do...anyways, a little off topic but I found a pedestal on the mountain just outside of Riverwood. I’m prompted to activate it but can’t. Is that something that becomes clearer at some point or what’s that about?
@Jimmer-jammer
Hmm...you're not talking about the 3 standing stones are you? Mage, Thief, Warrior?
Let me think...if you've been playing as long as I think you have, and you've been to Whiterun, would I be right in guessing that you've killed your first dragon and are angling for a way up the mountain to High Hrothgar? Are you behind Riverwood? Like, on the opposite side of Riverwood then where Bleak Falls Barrow is? There are only about 3 places I can think of where that could happen, and one of them IS back there. If it's where I'm thinking, (could you be more descriptive?) it is probably one of the places where you have to follow a questline and have in your possession an item which lets you activate it. More details?
@LordSteev Thanks for the reply! I have killed the first dragon! It was pretty sweet. This pedestal is just outside the door of a pass (I can’t remember the name, possibly north something pass) on the mountain directly NW of Riverwood. I was up there to collect the nettlebane for the tree in Whiterun (the sap is next). The pedestal is at the end of a stone walkway.
@Jimmer-jammer Good! ok, that's the one I was thinking of. Nothing will trigger it now, but much later in the game, if you're following all the side quest paths, it will be usable at some point. Did you already get nettlebane? That old hag gave me some trouble when I first went there, had to do some other stuff and come back stronger. Have you been to High Hrothgar yet? There's a road just to the east of where the hag is that is probably the easiest way to get there. (Just North, or uphill, from Helgen) Not to rush you! Man, now I want to dig out the game and play again.
@LordSteev I got the nettlebane. I avoided a few of the stronger enemies on my way there (quick save is a godsend in this game) and was able to pick off the witches one by one. Then I just ran straight at the hag with my healing arm out, once I was in close she stopped using magick and I was able to take her out.
I haven’t been to High Hrothgar yet, it’s easy to get distracted in this game. Yeah, I couldn’t be happier with the recommendation, man. Thank you! I’m having an absolute blast. Thanks for all the help.
@Jimmer-jammer
Glad you're enjoying it! No problem, I get to re-live the game through your questions! The first time I went after the hag, she blew me off that log you have to use to get to her with a fireball, and I landed below in an electric ward trap and was dead instantly, lol...
So do you have Lydia with you? She's nice, and carries stuff.
@Royalblues Oops my bad. Apologies.
🤦
I'm glad I edited my initial reply now.
😅
@TheArt yeah completely different scenarios. MS bought a publisher. You can’t compare a studio with several studios and publishing labels. MS can’t afford to put all those games on one system. Bet.
Anyone hoping for Bethesda games on PS5 besides those already announced is delusional. Also, plan for it, because Microsoft is probably gonna buy another developer as well. It's coming: Sega or Square.
@LordSteev I’ve been a lone ranger thus far but now that I know a partner also works I will be sure to bring her along!
@Jimmer-jammer
Unasked for, I know, but here's some pluses and minuses of bringing a companion along.
Pluses:
For a game of this age, they are actually coded quite well. Lydia, for example, will turn in to a pretty great fighter on her own.
They can wear armor of different sizes and quality that you find, or even make and improve for them.
Oddly, you can end up growing attached to them, even though it's not as sophisticated conversation-wise as a lot that comes out today.
The biggest and best positive, they carry stuff. Not as much as you can, but still, I always wanted more carry capacity in this game! It's only an extra 150 lbs. or so at first, but as you level yourself up, so do they.
Negatives:
They are not very stealthy, (though later you can craft them rings, items, etc. that make them more so, they still aren't near as stealthy as you can be on your own.)
Enemies can't kill them, but YOU can. This sucks if you've grown to like them. If you're using a bow, for instance, Lydia will run forward and get to sword fighting for you, but as she battles with foes, their positions end up changing with the ebb and flow of battle, and if she's almost unconscious and you accidently hit her with an arrow, or blade, or even spell effect, she's dead and gone for good if it's you that lands the decisive blow.
I found myself going solo if I was on a thieves guild or Dark Brotherhood mission, but taking her along for traveling. You can also just take her along and feed her inventory to carry 'till she's full, and then tell her it's time to part ways. She'll go back to your house in Whiterun and be available again from there, and she'll still have all the stuff you gave her. Convenient!
@Fenbops Timed =/= Permanent.
@LordSteev I figured they’d just be a helping hand with combat but by the sounds of it they are quite useful! I seem to be consistently managing my inventory so the extra carry capacity is especially welcome. I suppose I’ll have to be careful though cause I tend to swing my sword like an absolute maniac in this game. I’m hoping to dedicate some serious time to this over the weekend.
@LordSteev
I did play it. I prefer when Bethesda made games where npcs had a short story worth of dialogue to read through. I'm a lore kind of guy, I've never keen on their brand of gameplay.
